We welcome all offers of new or very gently-used furniture, but we reserve the right to refuse unsuitable donations.

Donations received at Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark’s ReStore are sold to the general public. We ask that all merchandise be in excellent condition, be 100% operable and be thoroughly cleaned. Items that are broken, scratched or in need of repair cannot be accepted, as we do not have the resources available to refurbish these items.

All items at the ReStore are sold as is. No exchange except for nonworking appliances. Note too that the ReStore is a self-service warehouse—bring a truck and a friend to help you get your purchases home.

Donation Guidelines

Categories of items we gladly accept

Most donations are tax deductible. We will give you a receipt for tax purposes. To guide you in determining the value of donated property, see IRS Publication 561. Click on the headings that best describe your donated items to learn more.

Antique cabinets, dressers, grandfather clocks, small tables; mid-century furniture.

8 years old or newer only: Washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, free-standing stoves, microwave ovens, trash compactors. 4 years old or newer only: Hot water heaters. New only: Vent hoods.

We cannot accept cook tops, wall ovens, vacuum cleaners, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors.

Mantels, stained glass windows, wall sconces.

We cannot accept columns.

Clean and gently used area rugs with bound edges. Previously installed wall-to-wall carpet or padding will not be accepted.

Framed paintings, prints, drawings, etchings, posters and art photography; art glass; pottery; sculpture.

Kitchen and bath cabinets with doors and drawers attached, including hardware and counter tops; medicine cabinets; vanities.

We cannot accept plastic laminate or resurfaced/re-painted cabinets.

Coins, antique toys, dolls, figurines, musical instruments, signs, stamp collections.

All 80 inches in height: Insulated exterior doors, new interior doors, used solid core interior doors, patio doors with all tracks.

We cannot accept hollow doors.

At least 400 square feet in full boxes of ceramic tile, vinyl tile, wood and wood laminate flooring; full rolls of vinyl flooring.

We cannot accept rugs or carpet.

Sofas and love seats (gently used only and in excellent condition), futons, chairs, recliners, rockers, ottomans, bed frames which include headboard-footboard and rails, bunk beds, day beds, dressers, night stands, chests, trunks, dining / dinette tables (no glass-topped tables) with chairs, curio/display cabinets, framed mirrors (not larger than 3 feet), hall trees, grandfather clocks, solid wood desks (not over 5 feet long), solid wood bookcases, solid wood or glass computer desks, rolling office chairs, filing cabinets, bar stools, benches, microwave or utility carts; outdoor furniture accepted mid-April through mid-October.

We cannot accept slipcovered furniture, platform beds, bed headboards without footboard and rails, large sectional sofas or sleeper sofas, entertainment centers, entertainment armoires, computer cabinets, particleboard furniture, dining tables without chairs, metal desks, metal credenzas, conference tables or chairs. China cabinets / hutches must be small and antique or small and modern and are accepted on a limited basis.

Door knobs (fully assembled with keys); hinges; nails, screws and washers in sealed solid containers.

6 years old or newer only: Furnaces.

4 years old or newer only: Small compact energy-efficient air conditioners accepted in spring and summer only.

Brand new only: Ceiling fans in boxes, duct sections, registers, vents, fireplace inserts, full bales of insulation.

Gaming chairs, desks, and equipment storage units, shuffleboard tables, foosball tables, air hockey tables, ping pong tables, card tables, dartboards and dart cabinets, and cornhole boards. Complete electronic gaming systems (must be new and unopened). If you have another type of indoor or outdoor game furniture, please email restore@habitatnewark.org to discuss your donation.

Exercise equipment, board games, used electronic game systems, and computer parts will not be accepted.

Lawnmowers, spreaders, chain saws, fencing sections and posts, grills (no propane tanks), garden tools, hoses, rakes, aluminum and fiberglass ladders, new sprinklers and irrigation systems, garden soil, grass seed, plants.

Table and floor lamps; chandeliers; ceiling, wall and outdoor fixtures with mounting hardware; new light bulbs; new ceiling fans in boxes.

We cannot accept fluorescent fixtures or used ceiling fans.

New milled lumber, molding and trim in minimum lengths of 6 feet.

Brass, woodwind and single percussion instruments; guitars.

We cannot accept pianos or organs.

Office furniture, supplies, and functioning equipment. The ReStore cannot accept large electronic devices such as printers and TVs, or anything considered “e-waste.”

Pedestal sinks. Brand new only: sinks, utility sinks, faucets, toilets, pipes, bath hardware and fixtures.

We cannot accept used shower doors.

Brand new only: Rolled roofing materials (full rolls); flashing, gutters and leaders (full pieces of galvanized, copper and vinyl); galvanized and vinyl hardware; tar (full cans).

We cannot accept shingles.

The ReStore accepts seasonal items such as lawn chairs and snow shovels and also holiday decorations. Items must be intact with all parts, clean and in working order.

New, uncut, full sheets of wallboard, paneling and plywood.

Autographed sports merchandise, autographed books, historical magazines and newspapers.

Power tools with intact cords, bench tools, floor tools, hand tools, hammers.

Wallpaper (full rolls), ceramic wall tile (at least 400 square feet in full boxes).

New windows only.

We cannot accept window sashes or window coverings.

Categories of items we cannot accept

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newark’s driver has the right to refuse a donation if it’s in an unsafe environment or in unacceptable condition. We reserve the right to cancel pick up due to dangerous roads or inclement weather. If a donation pickup needs to be rescheduled we will do so at our earliest convenience. Our driver has final discretion on all pickups. 

No mattresses, box springs, bedding, clothing, shoes, towels, tablecloths, napkins, doilies.

No playpens, walkers, cribs, car seats, child gates, children’s toys, swing sets.

No television sets, stereo equipment, computers.

No cinder blocks, bricks, pavers, stones.

No paints, paint thinners, stains, pesticides, hazardous chemicals.

No siding.

No window shades, blinds, drapes, valances, curtain rods, cornices.
